Product Questions
-
Can I eat & drink out of my pottery?
Yes! All glazes I choose and use are lead-free and food safe. If for some reason I choose a glaze that is not food safe, it will be noted very clearly in the product description. -
How do I care for my pottery?
With a simple dusting every now and then, your pot will be around for years to come. There is some controversy about whether pots are dishwasher safe. Generally speaking, a quick rinse in warm soapy water will make them look new again. I also recommend bringing in your outdoor ceramics during freezing temperatures to avoid cracking and breaking. -
Can I put my pottery in the dishwasher?
This is a controversial topic. Some say yes! Others say it’s best to wash with warm soapy water. Dishwashers can jostle and detergent can be abrasive to glazes. If you feel best washing by hand, do so. If you are comfortable putting it in the dishwasher, it shouldn’t come to any harm but I can’t guarantee. -
Can you explain your process?
All clay starts out in the ground!
I buy my clay from Georgie’s Ceramic and Clay Company. It’s an independent art store that’s been serving the Pacific Northwest since 1965 and I’m thrilled to support their business. I also buy glazes from Georgie’s. The clay I purchased has been processed so it doesn’t have impurities from the earth.
Next I wedge the clay. This is a process that pushes air bubbles out (it’s almost like kneading dough) so my clay is nice and smooth when I throw it on the wheel. From there, I throw the clay on the pottery wheel, center it and pull it into the shapes you see. Once it’s dried, I will trim it to make it even more exceptional and clean. This is when I
would add handles.
When I’m finished, it goes into the kiln for a bisque firing. After bisque firing, it’s been chemically changed so it will hold water. Generally, this is when I apply glazes. The glazed piece then goes into the kiln a second time so the glaze can turn to glass. These are the
beautiful colors you see on the finished pot.
As a last step, I sand the bottom of every pot with a diamond sander, so the bottom is like butter and won’t damage surfaces.
